Burano, a small island in the Venetian lagoon, is a fun place if you get high on colors like I do! If you are on Instagram, you have probably seen pictures of this cutesy town. And quite deservedly so! A vibrantly colorful town with canals running through it – what’s not to like?! I was absolutely not going to pass up the opportunity to visit Burano when I was in Venice. It is a quick trip from there, even if you have only a few hours to spare. The information about how to get there follows later in the post but first let’s look at the photos to see why you might want to visit!
Getting to Burano from Venice
The ferry to Burano leaves from the Fondamente Nove stop in Venice. You will need to take the Vaporetto #12 – that’s the ferry – from there. The ride takes about 45 minutes and a one-way trip costs about 7.5 euros. However, you might want to consider buying a day pass. It costs 20 euros but gives you unlimited ferry access for 24 hours. You can find more information on the ferries and schedules on this website.
The ferry goes via Murano. The island is famous for its colorful glass. You might want to consider stopping for a bit and checking it out. As I was short on time, I decided to head straight to Burano.
Things to do
In addition to the colorful houses, Burano is famous for its handmade lace. You will find a number of shops selling a variety of articles made of lace. Otherwise, you know, it is a tiny island. Grab a gelato, take leisurely a stroll and take pictures to your heart’s content!
